Care for pets at every stage of life
Pickering Animal Hospital offers wellness exams, vaccines, dental care, surgery, X-rays, lab testing, nutrition advice, urgent care and end-of-life care. We’re at Brock Road and Rossland Road, open evenings and Saturdays.
Wellness exams and vaccines
Most adult cats and dogs need a wellness exam once a year, and seniors every six months. Regular exams catch problems early, when they’re easier and less costly to treat.
At each visit, your veterinarian checks your pet from nose to tail and talks with you about:
- A vaccine plan based on your pet’s age, lifestyle and risk
- Flea, tick, heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention
- Weight, diet and any changes you’ve noticed at home
- Puppy and kitten visits, spay and neuter timing, and senior screening
How often does my pet need vaccines?
Puppies and kittens need a series of boosters in their first months. After that, most core vaccines are given every one to three years. We’ll set a schedule that fits your pet’s risk.
Dental care
Dental disease is one of the most common problems we see in cats and dogs. A yearly mouth check, plus a cleaning under anaesthesia when needed, keeps your pet comfortable and eating well.
Daily brushing or a proven dental diet helps between visits. When tartar or gum disease builds up, we do a full dental cleaning and assessment under anaesthesia, so we can clean below the gumline and check every tooth safely.
What are signs my pet needs a dental?
Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, brown tartar, dropping food, chewing on one side or pawing at the mouth. Call us to book a dental check.
Surgery
We perform spays, neuters and other surgeries at the hospital. Your pet is monitored throughout anaesthesia and goes home with a pain control plan.
Spaying and neutering helps prevent certain cancers, infections, unwanted behaviours and unplanned litters. Your veterinarian will talk with you about the right timing for your pet.
How do I prepare my pet for surgery?
We’ll give you instructions when you book, including when to stop food the night before and what time to drop off. Call us if you have questions before the day.
X-rays and lab work
X-rays and lab tests help us find out what’s going on when your pet is unwell, and check that older pets are healthy on the inside.
We use X-rays to look at bones, joints, the chest and the abdomen. Blood and urine tests check organ function, screen seniors before problems show, and make sure anaesthesia is safe before surgery or a dental.
Nutrition and weight advice
The right food supports your pet’s health at every life stage. We’ll help you choose a diet, manage weight and decide whether a prescription diet would help.
You can order your pet’s food and prescription diet online through myVetStore for home delivery or pickup at the hospital.
Urgent and emergency care
If your pet needs urgent care during our open hours, call us right away at (905) 239-2734. Our team will assess the situation and make room for your pet.
When should I call right away?
Trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, bleeding that won’t stop, a swollen or hard belly, repeated vomiting, straining to urinate, eating something toxic, or being hit by a car. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you decide.
End-of-life care
Deciding when to say goodbye is one of the hardest choices a pet owner makes. We’ll help you think through your pet’s quality of life and support you through each step.
Your veterinarian will explain what to expect during euthanasia, answer your questions, and go over aftercare options such as cremation, so you can focus on your pet.
